Create a signature for forms, PDFs and ID applications

Almost every Indian application — PAN, Aadhaar update, bank account, exam form, passport — asks for a signature image with a strict size and a small file limit. Scanning a signature on paper and cropping it in a photo editor is fiddly, and the result usually has a grey paper background that makes the form look untidy. This tool gives you two clean routes: draw the signature directly with a mouse or finger, or upload a photo of a signature you already have on paper and let the tool remove the background.

Drawing a signature

The pad records every stroke, so you can undo a single line without starting over. Line thickness responds to speed, which makes a quick flick thinner and a slow curve thicker — the same behaviour a real pen has. Draw large, then let the tool scale it down; drawing small and scaling up always looks jagged. Keep the signature inside the box with a little margin on all sides, because anything that touches the edge looks chopped when printed.

Turning a signature photo into a transparent PNG

Photograph the signature straight on, in good light, on plain white paper. Upload it and the tool converts near-white pixels to transparent while keeping the dark ink. The strength slider controls where that cut-off sits. If faint pencil strokes vanish, raise the value; if grey shadows from the paper remain, lower it. After conversion the tool finds the bounding box of the ink and trims the empty space, so the signature fills the output frame instead of sitting in a corner.

Transparent PNG or white JPG?

Transparent PNG is the right choice when the signature will be placed on a form, a letterhead or inside a PDF, because the paper colour shows through and there is no visible white box. White JPG is smaller and is what most portals expect when they ask for a signature under 20 KB. Note that PNG cannot be compressed by lowering quality — it is lossless — so if a portal demands a tiny file, switch the background to White and let the tool compress the JPEG.

Getting under a 20 KB limit

Signature files are mostly empty space, so the practical way to shrink them is to reduce the pixel dimensions rather than the quality. A 413 by 177 signature at 20 KB is comfortable. If you need 10 KB, try 300 by 130. Enter the limit in the optional field and the tool will search for the highest quality that fits, but the biggest saving comes from the size itself.

Using the signature in a PDF

Download the transparent PNG, then place it on the signature line of your PDF using the PDF signature tool. Transparent PNG sits cleanly over the line without hiding it. If the document will be printed and physically signed as well, leave enough blank space beside the digital signature.

Keeping it legitimate

Only create signatures for yourself or with explicit permission. Digitising your own signature for your own forms is normal and useful. Reproducing somebody else's signature on a document is forgery, regardless of the tool used.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a signature with a transparent background?

Choose Transparent PNG as the background. The tool converts near-white pixels to fully transparent and keeps the ink, so the signature can be placed over any document without a white box.

What size should a signature be for a PAN card form?

3.5 by 1.5 cm, which is 413 by 177 pixels at 300 DPI. That preset is the first chip in the size list.

How do I get my signature under 20 KB?

Use the 140×60 px or 3.5×1.5 cm preset with a White JPG background and enter 20 in the target size field. Reducing dimensions is more effective than reducing quality.

Can I upload a photo of my signature instead of drawing it?

Yes. Switch to Upload a signature photo, choose a clear photo taken on plain white paper, and adjust the background removal strength until only the ink remains.

Why is my uploaded signature patchy?

Usually the paper was not white enough or the light was uneven. Raise the strength slider, or retake the photo in daylight with the paper flat and the camera directly above it.

Does the tool work on a phone?

Yes. The pad supports touch and stylus input, and the upload route works with the phone camera or photo library.

Is my signature uploaded to a server?

No. Drawing, background removal and export all happen in your browser. Nothing is transmitted.

Real problems

The signature box is smaller than you think

A PAN form wants a signature 3.5 by 1.5 cm. That is smaller than a postage stamp. People sign inside a box that size on paper, the strokes merge into a blob, and the scan looks like a smudge. The right way is the opposite: sign large on a blank sheet, roughly three times the final size, then shrink the image down. Shrinking averages neighbouring pixels, so the lines stay smooth. Enlarging a small signature just makes the jagged edges bigger.

Photographing a signature is where most attempts fail. A phone held at an angle creates perspective distortion, so one end of the signature is thicker than the other. A shadow across the paper turns into a grey band that survives the threshold. The fix is boring: put the paper flat near a window, hold the phone parallel to the paper, and shoot straight down. Daylight from the side shows you the shadow before you press the button.

For digital forms, a transparent PNG is what you want. For anything that will be printed and pasted, white background is safer, because a printer will render transparent areas as white anyway and some viewers show them as black.

Fix it in this order

  • Sign large, then shrink — never the other way round.
  • Shoot straight down in daylight, no flash.
  • Keep a margin inside the box so strokes are not clipped.
  • Transparent PNG for digital forms, white JPG for printing.
  • Most portals want the signature under 20 KB; check before uploading.
